To the casual passers-by on a blustery day on Durban’s famed beachfront, it’s just a surfing lesson in the Indian Ocean’s warm seas. But a closer look reveals a story that’s far more interesting and inspiring. The two surfing instructors are S’nenhlanhla “Sne” Makhubu and Sihle Mbuto. They’re promising young semi-professional surfers who’ve been mentored by the charity Surfers Not Street Children, which works with vulnerable young people through surfing, and which has been supported by British Airways for more than a decade.   Read More...

Image: TOUR DE FRANCE TO FUND A PELOTON OF QHUBEKA BICYCLES FIRST 30 BICYCLES TO BE DISTRIBUTED - ASO is funding 176 bicycles (the number of riders who started the Tour de France) for Qhubeka’s programmes.

In 2018, the world’s most-watched cycling event, the Tour de France, saw 176 cyclists line up to tackle the event. Now, Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), the organiser of the event, has agreed to fund one Qhubeka Bicycle for every rider – a full peloton of bicycles to help change lives for people in South Africa. The first 30 of these bicycles are being distributed today through a programme operated by Qhubeka implementation partner, JAG Foundation.   Read More...

Image: A Can Do Attitude this Mandela Day 200 learners from LEAP Science and Maths Schools joined volunteers in constructing a massive Nelson Mandela Day mosaic made of food cans.

This was set to be the largest can mosaic ever created in South Africa. Built in Canal Walk Shopping Centre’s Food Court, the completed mosaic consists of over 29 000 food cans donated by Rhodes Quality and members of the public.
